Health & Wellness Programs

Oasis has developed a comprehensive set of programs to engage with our neighbors on health and wellness. Grounded in the theory of planned behavior, these targeted interventions meet people where they are to address the needs of individuals across the spectrum of age, income and food literacy.

Providing targeted financial incentives and evidence-based educational resources fill the gaps in food access that many at-risk families face. These programs have been implemented and evaluated in partnership with public health and academic institutions since 2016, and continue to evolve and expand over time to meet the changing needs of the people we serve.

Cooking Classes with the DC Public Library

Oasis’ foundational cooking class series is centered around fun monthly events providing accurate and practical information on preparing healthy food. These classes are actively countering the notions that healthy food lacks flavor or is not filling, a healthy diet is too expensive to maintain on a limited budget, and cooking at home is too time consuming for working adults. In partnership with local chefs and staff nutritionists, our cooking class series is busting those myths while improving attitudes and intentions around healthy eating as a behavior. Our longest running program, Oasis’ cooking classes utilize program and evaluation materials from USDA SNAP-Ed. In partnership with the DC Health department, Oasis has developed a curriculum that features seasonal recipes, and is evaluated using evidence-based tools from the USDA, tailored for our programs.
